Caring for your teeth while wearing braces

Contributed by the Specialist Dental Group®

Due to the nature of metal braces, thorough oral hygiene is more difficult and braces wearers will have an increased tendency of developing tartar, gingivitis or even demineralization of tooth enamel.

Brushing your teeth after every meal is highly recommended. You will need to complement this with interdental brushing or flossing using an interdental brush or floss thread.

Brushing Tips for Braces Wearers
  • Use the correct angle
Always clean along the gum margin with your toothbrush tilted at 45° angle. This will remove plaque which frequently collects along the gum margin to prevent gum infection.
  • Use the correct action
When brushing your teeth, move your toothbrush gently in a circular motion with the tips of the toothbrush remaining at the same place.
  • Interdental Brush
Brushing alone is not enough to clean your mouth. It is recommended to supplement your oral care regime with an interdental brush which is a small brush that looks like a “Christmas tree”. It comes with a single small tuft on a filament and is available with a straight or angled brush head to clean those difficult to reach areas.

Canadian International School Grade 7 Student, Eli Ramraj, Publishes First Novel

By Eli Ramraj

Eli Meadow Ramraj, a student at the Canadian International School, is twelve years old and has been writing since the age of nine. Black Amber is his third novel, and the start of a new trilogy called  The Elrolian Hunter. He writes everywhere – usually at home on his bed, but also on the school bus, where he can look out the window and create new ideas.

Eli gets ideas from all sorts of situations: in school, on vacation, and at home when someone says something to spark his interest, such as debates over the order a stack of magazines should go in – latest issue at the top, or bottom? He writes down all his ideas for characters and events in one document, and is easily able to pull them out when in need.

The inspiration for his latest novel is his passion for animals and wildlife, and how humans’ actions affect them. He has also gathered inspiration from all sorts of authors such as J.K Rowling and Arthur Conan Doyle. When he was two years old, he was given a Dorling Kindersley handbook of mammals, and that has been one of the most-used and most-loved books in his house, and an important resource in his research on animals.

Black Amber is a fantasy–adventure novel that takes place in a futuristic location over one thousand metres above earth. Eli likes to write stories with characters and situations to which readers can easily relate even in settings that are nothing like the world we live in now. He writes for a hobby, and loves being able to express ideas to the community through the means of a book.

The Benefits of Colour Analysis

By Jo Clary Maughan, AICI FLC, Leading Image Consultant

Do you know what colours suit you the best?  Does your wardrobe consist of clothes that are primarily black or white?

There are two ways to approach colour decision:  intuitively and intellectually.  This is usually achieved when you combine a little of what you feel with a lot of what you know.  Colour logic is learned and everyone can learn the logistics of colour and its application.

The colour you wear is the first thing that others notice about you.  By expanding your knowledge of colour you will be able to inspire others and enjoy the benefits of perceptive colour selection.

By having a personal Colour Analysis consultation, you will learn ‘how’ and ‘why’ some colours enhance your appearance, giving the look of health, youth and vitality.  Your Personal Colour Swatch and Colour Profile Booklet can be used to mix and match your clothing and for purchasing clothing and make-up colours that suit you the best.

A few colour pointers to remember along the way:

  1. Light and bright colours are advancing which enlarge the area to which they are applied.
  2. Dark colours recede and diminish size.  This is why we tend to love black so much – it makes us look taller and thinner!  Try navy, dark brown or forest green instead.
  3. Dressing in monochromatic colours (two colours of similar intensity) leave you looking taller and thinner.
  4. By choosing to wear a dark colour on the bottom and a light colour on the top, you will appear taller.  The  reverse is true wearing a dark top and a light bottom.

Join us today for our fun, informative and interesting Colour Analysis consultation so you can begin to enjoy a wardrobe of freedom, choice and colour!

Catching Up with a Canadian: Franca Ciambella

1.  Which parts of Canada do/did you call home?
The leafy districtof Montreal  known as the “Town of Montreal West”-it is a small picturesque part of the city that is home to mainly professionals (too many of my old university profs) and where animals have more rights than people in many parts of the world!

2.  How long have you carried your ‘ex-pat’ title?
23 years but it seems like just yesterday.

3.  Tell us your profession and what you do all day.
My day starts at 7 am when my husband and I see our three teenage boys off as they board their school bus. I then go for a run outdoors which lasts about one hour. Then off to work.
I am a lawyer and the Managing Director of a law firm I started called Consilium Law Corporation. My work day starts with meetings and briefings with my team of lawyers and staff, then onto client appointments, telephone calls with parties , review of documents, research of law, negotiations, administrative matters pertaining to the law firm etc. I am also the Vice president of the Canada ASEAN Business Council and sit on various boards, which I tend to work at towards the end of the work day. We try to have dinner at home by 6:30 pm as a
family and then hang out at home and do some work etc .

4.  2 things that you would beg Singapore Customs to import from the GWN (Great White North)?
McIntosh apples-they are my favourite and I can’t find them anywhere in Asia.I am not sure that it has anything to do with Customs though…Of course, secondly, chewing gum..I love all of the new flavours available in Canada-like raspberry and kiwi together or cheesecake flavoured …
