Dental Tips For Mothers (And Mothers-To-Be)

Mother’s Day is a day for celebration and honoring the wonderful mothers in our lives, and remembering the sacrifices that motherhood brings. Did you know that a visit to the dentist should be high on the health check-list of all mothers-to-be, or those planning to start a family?

During pregnancy, pregnancy gingivitis may set in during the second or third month of pregnancy and increase in severity until the eighth month. Swollen, bleeding, reddish and tender gums may develop. In some cases, such swollen gums can react strongly to irritants and become big lumps. These are called pregnancy tumors, but they are not cancerous and are generally painless. They usually resolve after the delivery of the baby.

Some studies have shown that pregnant women who have periodontal disease may have a higher chance of delivering too early and have a low birth-weight baby. In addition, maternal oral diseases such as gingivitis, periodontal infection and caries can affect the oral health of both the mother and her child because bacteria can be transmitted.

The use of birth control pills may also lead to the same oral health conditions of pregnant women. Bleeding, reddish and swollen gums may develop. Furthermore, certain drugs such as antibiotics, when taken together with birth control pills, may reduce the effect of the oral contraceptive. It is important therefore that women planning for pregnancy have their gums and teeth checked early by their dentist. This will be a good start to a healthy and happy pregnancy and the memorable journey to
motherhood.

Eurasian Community House

Another month gone and another fun out and about tour behind us.  A dozen of us met up at a local coffee shop in the Joo Chiat area and enjoyed drinks and conversation.  We began the tour with a brief introduction to the area and admired the ornate shop houses that surrounded us.  After a short walk we stepped into the Eurasian Community House and met our lively and informative Eurasian guide, Lucille Markus.  She began by showing us a beautiful ceramic mural of Lisbon that was presented by the Portuguese Embassy in the year 2000.  She then took us through the museum and explained the history and culture of the Eurasians in Singapore as well as the part they played in the war years and beyond.  Lucille’s personal connection to the history and some of the displays made the tour extra special.  We finished up with a video of the Jingli Nona; a Eurasian folk dance with Portuguese roots.  Also very special was the authentic Eurasian food at the lovely Quentin’s restaurant on the ground floor of the community house.  The chef explained all the dishes, (the beef semur was a big hit) and we topped off our lunch with traditional “sugee cake”.  A sweet memory for me to end on, as this will be my last Out and About before moving back to Canada...  Luckily for the rest of you, Singapore is packed with interesting destinations and Lynda and Sara will go on planning monthly outings to enjoy.

Terry Fox Run at CIS - TK

In January, 2012 on a sunny Singapore morning, the community from the Canadian international school Tanjong Katong (TK) campus ran with a purpose - to raise funds for cancer research in Singapore and to keep the memory of Canadian hero Terry Fox alive.

Everyone turned out in grey Terry Fox shirts - the efforts of our students were supported by staff, the Parent and Teachers association, and parents. From Junior Kindergarten to Grade 10, boys and girls slapped on some sun screen and ran with their peers under the hot Singapore sun.

The camaraderie of the community was evident. Parents were cheering their children on, students who had finished the run cheered for those still running as they strove to run as many laps of the field as possible. The staff room on campus was filled with a citrus scent early that morning, probably due to the thousands of oranges being sliced and bagged by parent volunteers - these succulent orange wedges were gratefully received by the exhausted runners as they completed their run.

The runners efforts were well rewarded - students raised a remarkable total of $34,700 which was donated to cancer research. This money was combined with the total from the Terry Fox Singapore run, with the cheque being presented to Jack Gray, chairman of that event.

MR500

Although we didn’t win any medals this regatta, the team showed incredible spirit during this weekend.  It was also a great building race for all of our new paddlers and good training to prepare them for the upcoming DBS Marina Regatta May 5th and 6th and the Singapore Dragon Boat Festival on June 30th and July 1st.

Our spirit continues to soar and so do our numbers. With our dedicated team training on Saturdays and Sundays, we have added Thursday practices and Tuesday dry land training. Word of warning to our competitors, we will be a paddling force to be reckoned with come May and July!

Between these two full team events, the Divas of our team have a competitive race on May 12th, with a fun inter mixed team race afterwards and a social beach BBQ after the races are completed.

We are always keen to have new paddlers come and join. You need not have experience, just commitment and a desire to have fun while exercising. Please contact us through our website, http://www.canadiandragons-sg.org/?q=contact or come to the Kallang Riverside Park.

We train in the boat on Saturdays from 4:00 – 6:00, and Sundays from 10:00 – 12:00. Please come 30 minutes early to sign in, get kitted out – we have PDF’s and paddles, and to warm up.
