Eat Healthy and Smile...

Contributed by Specialist Dental Group

A complete set of teeth and a good bite play an important role in chewing and speaking. You may have family members or friends who have missing or crooked teeth which cause them to be extra picky in the food that they consume.

People with missing teeth who wear dentures tend to avoid hard food. Studies have indicated that those with ill-fitting dentures have a higher risk of developing diseases caused by malnutrition and vitamin deficiencies. They may be unable to chew certain foods such as meat (high in proteins), fruits and vegetables (high in fibers). Instead, they resort to a soft diet such as mashed potatoes, cakes and pastries, which are high in sugar. The result is weight gain while not
getting the necessary nutrients.

Those with crooked teeth may eat less vegetables, as their teeth alignment does not allow them to chew the vegetables properly, causing difficulty in digestion and stomach discomfort. Furthermore, according to Singapore Cancer Foundation, unbalanced diets (high or low consumption of certain foods) may increase the risk of cancer.

Never let your dental issues affect your health and… smile. The solutions are available, range from dental implants to replace missing teeth or orthodontic treatment (i.e braces and Invisalign) and crowns to correct your bite. Seek advice from your dentist for your best treatment options.

Marina Barrage

Lynda Sellars and I are beginning to feel like we’re not very effective tour organisers. Before Christmas, Debbie Glenen led our tour for us because we were both back in Canada.  Then at the end of January, Lynda was in Laos. I was all set to lead the tour, but my husband had a nasty bicycle accident while we were on our CNY holiday and we had to stay on longer in Sumatra while he healed up enough to travel. Luckily, Lynda Rousseau downloaded some information and rallied the participants so the tour could go ahead without us.  It was a small group because so many people were away on holiday, but she tells me that the tour went very well.  They began with a stroll around Marina Barrage, admiring the architecture, the view of the city and some of the unique art works.  Then they met the guide who gave them an engaging tour of the Sustainable Singapore Gallery and talked about the Marina Barrage’s role in flood control, water supply and the lifestyle attraction of the Marina Basin.  The group finished up with a tasty lunch at the Verve restaurant at Marina Bay.  For those of us that missed this fun outing, free tours are available almost every day and information can be found on the Marina Barrage website.  Barring any last minute travel plans or accidents, Lynda and I are very much looking forward to seeing you at the next Out and About tour.

A Community United

Each year, the Canadian International School community participates in a Terry Fox run to raise funds for cancer research. This year, at the school’s Tanjong Katong campus, students, parents and staff were out on the field on the morning of January 20 prepared to run - showing their support for the fight against cancer. School spirit and pride was evident as younger participants along the side lines, not content to simply cheer while waiting for their turn to run, jumped up and held out their hands for hi-fives as older runners passed by.

The Terry Fox Run is just one of many community outreach and service initiatives that students can participate in at the Canadian International School, and provides students with the opportunity to understand their individual responsibilities to society.

As part of our trans-disciplinary curriculum, community outreach and service plays an important part in fostering the International Baccalaureate (IB) learner profile – the core of all IB programmes. Engaging students in community service projects is a wonderful way of encouraging our students to be principled, caring and open minded. We know that learning outside the classroom and helping others is an important part of becoming responsible and well balanced global citizens.

Mardi Gras Race

By Sally Monteith

The Canadian Dragons have been working hard for the upcoming Mardi Gras race on February 25. This event mixes members from all the dragon boat teams and assigns them to a specific boat. The teams then complete a course around the Kallang Basin and Marina Bay with different tasks that should be completed at multiple stations. The race is followed by a BBQ on the banks of the Kallang Basin. It’s a great race and an enjoyable and social afternoon.

We are always looking for new paddlers and now is a great time to join with various fun races in the upcoming months. There is also plenty of time to train and prepare for the Singapore Dragon Boat Festival the last weekend of June. This is a big race and the Canadian Dragons have a medal to defend!

If you are interested in joining our great team, come out for training at Kallang Riverside Park. We have boat training Saturdays from 4:00 – 6:00, and Sundays from 10:00 – 12:00. Please come 30 minutes early to sign in, get kitted out – we have PFD’s and paddles, and to warm up. Hope to see you soon.
