Alernative Braces

Q: I would like to straighten my teeth but would not want metal braces as I am working. Are there any other alternatives?

If your main concern with metal braces is aesthetics, then you can consider Invisalign, lingual or ceramic braces. Invisalign straightens your teeth with a series of clear aligners. In some cases, patients may require tooth-coloured attachments on their teeth to aid with tooth movement. These are not invisible but are discreet. Lingual braces use metal brackets and wires that are placed on the back of your teeth, completely preventing it from being seen. Ceramic braces attach to the teeth in a similar fashion to metal braces, but the brackets are tooth-coloured. Here are other factors for consideration:

Comfort
Invisalign aligners are removable, hence it is convenient for you to remove them whenever required. As for lingual and ceramic braces, you may find that the metal wires/brackets rub against your tongue/inner cheeks, resulting in initial soreness and in some cases, ulcers. Nonetheless, rest assured that most patients are able to adapt quickly to them.

Discipline
For Invisalign, you are recommended to wear the aligners for a minimum of 20 hours a day. That means that you remove them during meals, brush 30 to 45 minutes after your meals and then wear them again. As for lingual and ceramic braces, you need to set aside more time to brush your teeth as the wires/brackets tend to trap food/plaque.

You are encouraged to discuss your concerns with your orthodontist so that he/she may advise the best treatment option for you.

A CIS - SRT Theatre Collaboration

SAVE THE DATE

Tuesday, February 13,  6:00 pm

In an effort to SAVE OUR SHAKESPEARE at Fort Canning Park, CIS students are involved in raising funds for the same. They will be staging The Tempest, and all proceeds from the sale of tickets will go towards bringing Shakespeare in the Park back in Singapore.

The Tempest by William Shakespeare will be staged at SRT (Singapore Repertory Theatre) on TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 13, 6: 00 pm, by none other than 39 CIS students from grades 4 to 6.

A show not to be missed, Prospero is ready with his magic to create the storm and Cannibal will have you gripping your seats. Remember, we are talking about 10 and 11 year olds students who have the courage to not only unfold the play in its original form but to bravely take on the stage. The nymphs with their dances and forest spirits with their voices, and Miranda and Ferdinand in love are sure to enthral your Tuesday
evening.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank SRT for having generously offered their theatre and given our students a wonderful opportunity to stage The TEMPEST.

Looking forward to seeing many of you on TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 13.

Ingredients

I whole chicken, cleaned
¼ cup salt-reduced soy sauce
¼ cup kecap manis
2 ½ cups water
½ cup Shou Xing wine (Chinese rice wine)
2 cups salt-reduced chicken stock
4 spring onions, ends trimmed, left whole
3cm-piece fresh ginger, peeled, cut into matchsticks
3 garlic cloves, bruised
1 whole star anise
500gm Chinese greens (bok choy, choy sim, baby kalian, Chinese spinach)

Sesame oil
Ready fried crisp shallots
Long red chilli, thinly sliced
4 cups ready steamed rice

Here’s what to do:

Place the soy, kecap manis, water, wine, stock, spring onion, ginger, garlic and star anise in a saucepan over high heat. Bring to the boil. Remove any scum. Add chicken and simmer for ½ an hour. Cover. Set aside for 60 minutes to poach.

Transfer the chicken to a clean work surface. Chop and slice into portions. Cover with foil to keep warm.

Strain the poaching liquid through a fine sieve into a large jug. Discard the spring onion, ginger, garlic and star anise. Return 560ml (2 1/4 cups) of the poaching liquid to the pan. Discard the remaining poaching liquid. Bring to boil, turn off and add Asian greens. Blanch for 3-5mins until tender but still crisp

FITBIT: Anti-aging Exercise & Nutrition tips

Happy New Year 2018!

By Jessica Gan
A year older, a year wiser? Whilst we cannot control age, we can certainly increase our awareness and knowledge of fitness exercises suitable for anti-aging.

Research has found that HiiT (high intensity interval training) helps to fight anti-aging. Why? It improves several markers of health, like insulin sensitivity, muscle strength and mitochondria function. The latter declines as we age, so improving it helps aging.

It is estimated that more than 50% of all women and 20% of all men over the age of 50 will suffer an osteoporotic fracture at some time in their lives (U.S Dept of Health & Human Services, 2004). Therefore, nutrition therapy of osteoporosis includes adequate calcium intake and Vitamin D intake.
Vitamin D sources include fortified milk, fish, eggs, butter and of course sunlight.

To that end, whilst we are enjoying the sunny tropical Singapore weather, we should remember to have sufficient sunscreen available on our finger tips. Hope these tips are useful. Let's enjoy each moment, healthily and happily!
