Asian Bean Shoot Salad with Honeyed Cashews

Ingredients:

  • 400g beansprouts
  • 40g bunch of coriander
  • 100g cashew nuts
  • 1 tbs honey
  • 2 large red chillis
  • 1 ripe mango
  • 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 tsp sesame oil
  • 1 lemon or lime

Here's what to do:

  1. Place beansprouts into a large bowl.
  2. Put a few coriander leaves aside, to use later as a garnish. Slice up the remaining coriander and add it to the beansprouts.
  3. Place a frying pan on a low heat, add a splash of olive oil and the cashews. Toast them until they start to colour.
  4. Remove the pan from the heat and drizzle over the honey, making sure the cashews are completely coated.
  5. Finely slice the chilis.
  6. Halve and peel the mango, remove the stone and slice or cube the flesh.
  7. Add mango, chilis and cashews to the salad.
  8. Make dressing with soy sauce, sesame oil, extra virgin olive oil and the juice from one lemon or lime. Adjust to taste.

Dental Crowns

Q: Why do I need to get a dental crown and will it be painful?

A: A dental crown is a restoration that completely covers or caps a tooth, in order to bring it back to its natural size, shape and colour. The dental crown protects the tooth from
further damage and can be made to be look like your natural tooth.

There are various reasons to get a crown, they include the following:
  • A cavity that is too large for a filling
  • To cover a dental implant that has been placed
  • A cracked or worn down tooth
  • To protect a tooth that is treated with root canal treatment
  • To improve your smile by covering a discoloured or badly shaped tooth

When preparing the dental crown, approximately 1mm of your existing tooth structure will be removed to make way for the core (foundation of crown). A dental impression is then made for the final crown to be fabricated. During then, a temporary crown may be placed so that you have a complete smile. This entire procedure is done under local anaesthesia so that the tooth being restored is numb. Sensitivity might be felt around the tooth, nonetheless, it should go away as time passes and pain is generally minimal.

Grade 10 students win best music video award

One of the many things that defines a CIS student is their appetite for risk-taking. Grade 10 students Ryan Chow, Zildjian Boon and Darren Tang embodied this trait when they stepped out of their comfort zone to create a music video that eventually won accolades at two different film festivals.

The students created ‘Dehydrated’ a music video based on a song they made themselves. The entire process from planning through to editing took about six months. They were inspired by other artists’ use of drones and tried to utilise the same technology throughout the project. Their love of competitive sports such as swimming, influenced their decision to match the song with a story of a swimming race between the central character and other competitors.

Encouraged by the positive response they received from friends, the students decided to participate in several film festivals. This included the Singapore International Student Film Festival where they won the best editing category and the Across Asia Youth Film Festival where they won the best music video award.

“Winning the best music video award was astonishing as we weren’t expecting to win due to the caliber of other submissions,” said Ryan. “It took us a while to comprehend what was going on. Even after a week it still didn’t feel real! We are really proud and happy that we won the award though. It was exciting and a lot of fun to be part of the festival. Aside from from getting to tour a number of studios like Disney, HBO and MediaCorp, we also got to attend talks that really inspired us to do more in the future!”
